Repair work plagues parks

— Despite record attendance in national parks last year, a maintenance backlog plagues the National Park Service.

Officials said last week that a $12 billion backlog in needed repairs and maintenance could hinder outdoor recreational opportunities this summer in the country’s 412 national parks.

Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke of Montana said his No. 1 priority is the backlog. The Park Service says much of the funding shortfall is due to lower-than-expected revenues from federal transportation bills and the increased cost of construction.
