MABTON The Vikings secured a district playoff berth against Wahluke last night.
Mabton defeated Zillah, 10-4, to ensure its 6 p.m. Friday match-up at home against Wahluke.
The winner advances to Tuesday’s match against the winner of Thursday’s district match between Naches and Royal. Friday’s loser ends its season.
Sunnyside lost its match 0-2 to Davis last night, but the final standings among the Big 9 teams will be determined by the outcome of tonight’s match between Eisenhower and Eastmont.
Either way, the Grizzlies compete for the district championship title and a state berth Tuesday as league champions or second in the conference. The loser of Tuesday’s game enters a double elimination bracket in which the winner of a match to be played May 12 advances to state.
The Vikings were in control of last night’s match against the Leopards throughout the first half.
The halftime score was 8-0, and Mabton let some of its bench players take to the field in the second half.
Jose Gonzalez of the Vikings scored a hat trick with goals in the 28th, 35th and 39th minutes.
There were back-to-back goals in the 14th through 20th minutes. Jorge Espinoza, scored the first of four goals. Jose Morales scored the next two, and Oscar Aguilar scored in the 20th minute.
Accounting for the eighth goal of the opening half was Sergio Medina’s shot in the 36th minute.
In the second half, Zillah’s Jacob Tilley scored on a PK in the 47th minute.
Mabton’s Aguilar scored in the 50th minute, and Zillah answered with a goal in the 52nd by Pablo Medina.
Armando Morales of the Vikings scored in the 54th minute.
Two more goals were made by Leopards Guillermo Sanchez and Gustavo Torres in the 60th and 66th minutes, respectively.
Angel Soto of the Leopards recorded 12 saves and teammate Eric Ceballos had 9.
Jose Camacho of Mabton had 8.
Mabton had 21 shots on goal, while Zillah had 12.
Michael Raya led the Pirates in last night’s victory over the Grizzlies.
He scored both goals — one in the 12th minute and the second in the 76th.
Cole Mattson of Davis provided assistance to Raya for the second goal.
Sunnyside had 11 shots on goal; Davis had 8.
Grizzlies keeper Elias Milanez recorded 4 saves; Pirates keeper Cuauhtemoc Mungia had 8.
The Spartans lost their final match of the season last night to South Central Athletic Conference No. 1-ranked Highland, 0-5.
Scoring for the Scotties was Jose Cerna (2 goals), Lenny Durantes, Salvador Ayala and Johnny Rivera.
Highland had 12 shots on goal, while Granger had 5.
Ricardo Brito, keeper for the Spartans, denied the Scotties 7 times.
His counterpart, Omar Ramos, had 5 saves.
“It was toe-to-toe until the last five minutes of the first half,” Granger coach Salvador Mendoza said.
