SUNNYSIDE “Let’s Party” is a ‘fair’ theme for the 125th birthday anniversary of the Central Washington Fair.
This year a lot of celebrations will be held to promote the 10-day fair that is held at the State Fair Park in Yakima, Fair Anniversary chairwoman Jerri Honeyford of Sunnyside told Daybreak Rotary Wednesday.
She said a special exhibit will be set up at the fairgrounds to denote the history of the fair and its many contributions to agriculture in Central Washington.
The fair, which has been held at the same location — 1301 S Fair Ave. — still boasts the original horse barns with improvements, of course, fair manager Greg Stewart said.
The Agricultural and Modern Living Buildings also have a long history, he said. The only time the fair was closed was during World War II, from 1942-46, Honeyford said.
“The several of the building were used to manufacture Kenworth trucks which eventually were used on the Burma Trail during the war,” she said.
The project was top secret and we haven’t been able to secure photos,” she said.
This year the fair will be held Sept. 22-Oct 1. With a line-up that includes Lee Ann Rimes to Smash Mouth, plus a variety of free entertainment on the grounds.
