SUNNYSIDE Second Harvest will distribute 2,500 holiday meal boxes for local families in time for Thanksgiving.
An estimated 250 of those boxes will be handed out to families at Northwest Farm Credit Services, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, at 2735 Allen Road.
Second Harvest staff and volunteers will distribute 2,000 meals in the Pasco area Nov. 18 with a mobile distribution of 250 boxes in Yakima Nov. 14.
The distribution will mark the culmination of the nonprofit’s second Annual Turkey Drive, an online fundraiser in which community members, businesses and other organizations can donate a $30 meal for local families in need.
Sponsoring organizations providing food, funds and promotional support are AgriNorthwest, Dairy Farmers of Washington, Domex Superfresh Growers, Easterday Farms, Grimmway Farms, H.R. Spinner, Lamb Weston, Les Schwab Tire Centers, Northwest Farm Credit Services and United Healthcare.
Holiday meal boxes will contain a turkey, potatoes, onions, carrots, milk, apples and crumb topping.
Castle Event Catering in Richland is partnering with Second Harvest again this year to make the holiday meal boxes truly special. Executive Chef Andy and Kathy J. Craig, founders, are creating special recipes for the event, which will incorporate box ingredients.
“We are honored and proud to work with Second Harvest again this year on the Turkey Drive. They truly do all the hard work gathering fresh, healthy ingredients from local farms and other sources for our area families. We hope our customized recipes will assist these families in enjoying their Thanksgiving Day,” Craig said.
Donations can be made online at www.2-harvest.org/turkey, or mailed to Second Harvest Turkey Drive, PO Box 3068, Pasco, WA, 99302.
Donate a $30 meal of a turkey with all the fixings, or make a financial contribution of any amount.
The first $10,000 in donations this year will have double the impact, thanks to the Edward Jones Community Match program.
