SUNNYSIDE Superintendent Kevin McKay and his administrative staff have asked for community input into the district’s facilities needs.
The community has responded, he said yesterday.
A fine arts facility is now on the list, as requested by numerous parents.
A fine arts building and other facilities on the list will be up for discussion Dec. 6 at a lunchtime community forum.
The forum will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m in the Denny Blaine Board Room at 810 E. Custer Ave.
Lunch will be provided.
McKay and his staff and School Board members have been studying facilities needs for more than a year.
They have taken their findings to the public through personal presentations and the internet website.
The original proposal was for expansion and/or improvements in classroom space and expansion and improvement of athletic facilities.
Because of the property available, the high school, in general, would grow southward. The football stadium would be moved south, enlarged and modernized. The land it occupies now would be taken over by educational buildings.
The district was estimating a cost of $17-$20 million to meet those needs. That’s likely to increase if the district also goes for a fine arts building.
“We’ve been talking with the community, and we’ll continue to talk with the community until we know what we want,” McKay said.
