Don’t label someone as ‘controversial’

FORUM

I am a regular subscriber and reader of your newspaper. On Sept. 27, you ran a story titled, “Sheriff’s Office: Controversial resident commits suicide in field by Managing Editor Ted Escobar.

I found the story to be insensitive, offensive and very unprofessional. It was condescending and rude to label Tom Paul “controversial.” I don’t know of any situation that would merit a story like this in our community newspaper, much less the front page.

I am a survivor of bi-polar disorder and a suicide attempt myself. Would I, too, have been on the front page had I died from my attempt?

As we are all aware, it is unwise to judge someone unless you’ve first walked in their shoes. I believe you owe the Paul family a profuse and public apology.
