Golfers gearing up for third annual Ryder Cup

— The Black Rock Creek Golf Course and Mt. Adams Country Club golfers are preparing for their annual show-down, the Ryder Cup.

This is the third year teams from each of the courses have competed in the 2-day tournament, started after Sean Tudor and Grant Smith of the local team came up with the idea.

“We’ve always been in a lot of tournaments, interacting with one another,” Mt. Adams Pro Rich Farrell said.

Smith said the Black Rock golfers used to compete against Othello.

“They couldn’t field a team a few years ago,” he said.

As a result, Smith and Tudor approached golfers from Mt. Adams, who jumped on board.

Farrell said the Mt. Adams team won the first year in a play-off and handily beat Black Rock last year.

“They are really fired up,” he said.

Troy Wilmoth of the Mt. Adams team told Farrell it is one of the best tournaments of the year.

“That’s a big compliment,” Farrell said.

Black Rock Capt. Troy Monholland said both courses field the best golfers they can.

“It’s a 2-man best ball format with no handicaps,” he said.

Golfers young and old take part, Monholland said.

The golfers come from Prosser to Toppenish.

Wilmoth is one of the Mt. Adams team’s best golfers, having just missed the professional tour.

The Black Rock team includes teachers, business owners and former high school state competitors.

The tournament starts at 10 a.m. at Black Rock Creek Golf Course on Oct. 21.

The following day, tee-off at Mt. Adams is also at 10 a.m.
