SUNNYSIDE The Grizzlies girls soccer team had something to celebrate last night — a 4-1 victory over Eisenhower.
The Grizzlies attacked the goal 12 times, while the Cadets tried to get the ball past keeper Morgan Duim 7 times.
Arriana Alvarez of Sunnyside hit pay dirt in the 12th minute, Erika Santiago scored in the 20th on a shot from 18 yards, and Jenessy Mercado scored in the 30th to give the team a 3-0 lead.
The Cadets’ lone goal was in the 32nd by Alisha Montana off a corner kick.
Audrey Ramos of Sunnyside scored the last goal of the match with 5 minutes in the match off an assist by Yasmin Frausto.
“We played more consistently as a unit,” Grizzlies coach Elizabeth Garcia said.
A rivalry match-up between the host Leopards and Granger girls soccer teams ended in favor of the visitors, 3-0, last night, avenging an earlier 2-3 loss.
Yaneli Torres of the Spartans scored a hat trick in the first half of the match.
She scored in the 21st minute without a direct assist, in the 30th minute off a pass from Jennifer Gonzalez and again in the 36th minute off another assist by Gonzalez
The Spartans led 3-0 at the halftime whistle and neither of the two teams was able to get the ball past the crossbars in the second half.
Spartans keeper Jasmin Rodriguez shut the Leopards out of the goal 15 times, whereas her counterpart had 9 saves.
Two other Lower Yakima Valley teams also competed last night.
