Gridiron action heats up tonight

Turn off the TV and head to the stadium tonight. It’s football under the Friday night lights.

Several Lower Yakima Valley teams are expected to be headlining the show this season. Sunnyside Christian is ranked No. 5 in Class 1B football, and Prosser is the No. 10 ranked team in the 2A poll.

But while pollsters are not giving the Grizzlies the credit they deserve, Sunnyside is coming off its best football season in decades in 4A. And coaches here are promising an explosive offense and a defensive jaugernaut.

Don’t count out the Zillah Leopards, either. The guys in orange and black are also coming off a great season last year that saw them in and out of the 1A rankings. We also have some good prospects in teams from Kiona-Benton, Grandview, Mabton and Granger.

Regardless which team you support, your local stadium is the place to be this Friday night and for the next 10 weekends. Expect to see our players running fast, hitting hard and displaying appropriate sportsmanship.

Hometown football offers us a chance to forget our differences and unite behind our local youth. It gives our youth a chance to learn about themselves, teamwork, sportsmanship and professionalism.

The same holds true for school bands, drill teams and cheerleaders, which are also part of the excitement.

This isn’t the showboating you see on TV. Win or lose, local football is about real local athletes, about community and old-fashioned fun and excitement. So put on your team colors, paint your face and join many others in supporting our youth.

See you on the gridiron.
