One of four children, Evelyn Villegas-Zaragoza, 17, is a determined young lady.
Her heart and passion for her community is big, and that’s why she has joined nine others in the bid for the 2018-19 Miss Sunnyside title.
Villegas-Zaragoza is the daughter of Graciela Zaragoza, being raised with two older brothers and a younger sister.
She believes serving as Sunnyside’s ambassador will be a fun experience, and she thinks she would be a unique representative of the community.
“I’m not as girly, and more of a fighter,” Villegas-Zaragoza said.
There is strength and ambition in today’s youth she believes is important to highlight. Sunnyside youngsters are particularly resilient, working toward ambitious goals others may not realize, she said.
A wrestler, boxer and member of the Sunnyside High School Grizzly Dance Team, her interests reflect the ambitions of her peers. She believes the contrast between the fighting spirit of two of her favorite activities and the grace involved in dancing show a fierce determination for success, as well as the ability to be a poised individual.
If named Miss Sunnyside, Villegas-Zaragoza would like to introduce other young girls in the community to one of her favorite activities — boxing.
“I want them to have a chance to empower themselves,” she said.
Learning to defend one’s self can build confidence in a person, Villegas-Zaragoza said.
If women understood their own power, she believes there would be less violence in the world.
The Miss Sunnyside Pageant will be staged at 7 p.m. in the Sunnyside High School auditorium Sept. 15.
