Editor’s Note: Chris Albrecht of Albrecht Glass shared this glimpse into the past recently. His business is on the original site of Charley’s OK Tires.

SUNNYSIDE — Charley and Laura Kauer first opened their tire repair shop along then State Route 12, back in 1937.

The shop wasn’t much to look at at first, but it provided a living to the young couple newly arrived in Sunnyside.

A short while after arriving in the Yakima Valley, Charley’s OK Tire Shop, was known as more than “changing tires in alongside the road.” Charley also provided welding repairs.

A photo from the time was captioned “The days were long, profits low, but they (the Kauers) kept going.”

Chris Albrecht of Sunnyside Glass, was reminded of the history he shared with the Kauers when he found an old newspaper tucked away in the back shop.

Albrecht started his first business in Toppenish, In the mid-70s, he expanded into Sunnyside. That was when he got to know the Kauers, a relationship that included acquiring OK Tire Store.
