Mustangs stay alive in CWAC playoffs

— The Mustangs boys basketball team will compete another day after defeating East Valley (Yakima) 72-63 on Monday.

The teams competed in a loser-out Central Washington Athletic Conference playoff.

With the win, the Mustangs advance to tonight’s 7 p.m. game at Wapato. The loser of the game will end its season, while the winner advances to play against Toppenish at noon Saturday at Central Washington University.

Against the Red Devils, Prosser had a 15-13 first-quarter lead. The Mustangs kept the momentum going in the second quarter (14-9) improving the lead to 29-22 at the close of the first half.

The Red Devils couldn’t keep the pace set by the Mustangs in the third quarter, either. Prosser further increased its lead, outscoring the visitors 22-13.

The Mustangs closed the game with a 21-28 fourth stanza. The Red Devils, in spite of the scoring advantage, were unable to overcome the earlier deficit.

Prosser coach Toby Cox was happy with the outcome.

“(It was a) great, intense game and (we’re) glad we got the first playoff win,” he said.

“We had some kids step up,” Cox said.

Andre Vanguardia was the leading scorer with 18 points.

Four of his teammates also scored double digits. Haden Hicks tallied 13, Chase Courtney scored 12, Will Weinmann scored 11 and Calvin Maljaars chipped in 10.

East Valley’s Sahill Randhawa had a game high 26 points, while teammates Ryan Sullivan and Haley Harrington scored 12 and 10, respectively.

Having five score in double digits in a single game is something Cox is pleased with.

“It shows we have different guys that can step up any given night,” he said.

Cox said that makes it more difficult for other teams to execute a game plan.
