The Spartans live to fight another day

— The Granger Spartans boys basketball team defeated Kiona-Benton 51-35 on Saturday, advancing in the South Central Athletic Conference Boys Basketball Tournament.

The Spartans play Royal Thursday, but the time of the game and the location were not available as of press time.

Against the Bears, Granger led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The Spartans continued to place defensive pressure on Kiona-Benton to outscore the Bears 15-7 in the second period.

Granger held a 26-15 halftime lead.

“Our defense showed up,” Granger coach David Morse said. “They played great team defense.”

In the third quarter, the Bears tried to fight back, outscoring Granger 11-8.

The Spartans created additional scoring opportunities, taken advantage by Adrian Soliz with three treys in the final quarter. Granger held on and won with a 17-9 fourth quarter.

Soliz sealed the win with the three 3-point shots, which contributed to 11 points total.

He was the only member of the Spartans in double digits, but teammate Jose Alvarez collected 17 rebounds.

Keanu Cantu scored 9 points; Jake Stewart, Alvarez and Trennan Slade each scored 6 points; Trevor Smith and Joseph Soliz tallied 5 apiece and Andre Castro chipped in 3 points.

Leading the Bears with 10 points was Abe Rheinschmidt.

“The team believed in and trusted each other,” Morse said. “The defense was fantastic.”
