Being able to treat a chronic wound just got easier thanks to a new form of medical care- telewound care, a partnership between PMH Medical Center and Kadlec Medical Center.

— PMH Medical Center and Kadlec Medical Center have partnered to offer telemedicine wound care services – telewound – to inpatients at PMH Medical Center.

While the organizations have partnered to utilize telemedicine in other areas of care, this partnership is the first in the local area for telemedicine wound care.

Certified wound care nurses at Kadlec will provide real-time evaluations of PMH Medical Center inpatients with wounds and offer remote consultations to help providers in Prosser best treat the wounds.

“Providing telewound allows our patients to receive the care they need, locally. This technology and coordinated care can help reduce the healing time of wounds, leading to quicker recovery, decreased costs and improved quality of life for patients,” PMH Medical Center Acute Care Director Marla Davis, RN, said.

PMH Medical Center nurses will use a telehealth cart with an advanced camera to record images of a patient’s wound. The images are uploaded into the electronic medical record (EMR) where the Kadlec certified wound care nurses can review the images in “real time”.

This will allow them to develop and make recommendations for the care team in Prosser, which will dress the wounds and carry out the patient’s plan of care.

The telewound partnership allows wound care services to continue locally at Prosser while internal PMH Medical Center nurses pursue wound care certification.

“We’ve had great success and feedback utilizing similar telestroke technology in our emergency department and also teledieticians for our Swing Bed patients” Davis said. “This partnership provides our patients with the advanced, quality care they need without the stress, cost and time of travel; it’s a true benefit to our patients.”
