Sunnyside man face charges after burglary

— An alert neighbor called police in time for them to catch a suspect shortly after a burglary at 1516 Rock Ave.

Police found the suspect, Francisco J. Valencia, 21, of Sunnyside, relatively quickly.

According to the charging narrative written for Yakima County Superior Court by Officer Z. Helms, officers were called at 11:45 a.m. A neighbor told police he’d heard a window break on the house and went to check.

The witness said he saw man run from rear of the neighbor’s home, jumping a fence and running west. He provided a description.

Helms was in the area when the call came in. He began searching and soon located a person fitting the description standing behind a Roadrunner Deli.

When Helms turned his patrol car in that direction, he said, the suspect ran.

Helms was joined by Officer B. Elliott, and they began looking together. They located an open door at the rear of a neighboring building at 1417 S. 3rd Ave.

The officers announced themselves several times, Helms said, then entered the building. They found the suspect hiding, Valencia.

“Valencia was sweating profusely and had several lacerations on his right hand that were bleeding,” Helms said.

Helms said the sweatshirt Valencia was allegedly wearing was found behind the Roadrunner. He said there was blood on the cuff of the right sleeve.

Searching the area further, officers found a black Taurus handgun in a dumpster about 20 feet from the sweater with blood on the handle. They continued to find evidence as they searched.

According to Helms, a check of Valencia’s record showed he had to prior felony convictions.

Helms said Valencia was booked into Yakima County Jail for second degree unlawful possession of a firearm, first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary, third-degree possession of stolen property and third-degree Malicious mischief.
