Mabton boys no longer winless

Vikings down Dayton, 59-45, in 2B contest

— The Vikings boys basketball team finally won a game this season, topping 2B league opponent Dayton, 59-45, on Saturday.

Mabton (1-12) took command of the game early, outpacing the winless Bulldogs, 15-8, in the first quarter.

Dayton (0-13) never recovered as the Vikings outscored the Bulldogs in every quarter.

Junior Alexis Garza put up a game-high 31 points for the Vikings. He also had 4 assists.

Teammates Adrian Enriquez, Luis Amezcua and Ulises Galarza each posted 6.

Junior Jose Morales led on the boards for Mabton with 13 rebounds. He also added 3 points.

Jorge Espinoza and Freddy Macedo also scored three points.

Mabton’s first victory of the season came one day after the Vikings lost a 2B game to Desales, 57-36.

The Fighting Irish (5-6) took the lead early, holding a 3-point edge at the end of the first quarter.

At the half, the Vikings trailed 23-17.

The Fighting Irish added to their lead in the third quarter and overwhelmed Mabton in the fourth.

Macedo paced the Vikings with 9 points and teammates Garza and Amezcua added 8 and 7, respectively.

Morales added 5, Jorge Espinoza 4 and Javier Cisneros 3 for the Vikings.

Jake Wylie had a game high 13 points for Desales.

Mabton boys next take the court Friday at Kitttas/Thorp (12-1).

Tipoff time is 7:30 p.m.

Kittitas/Thorp is coming off a 75-44 win over Walla Walla Valley Academy on Saturday.

Yakama Tribal 84, Bickleton 34

TOPPENISH — The Yakama Tribal boys routed the Bickleton Pirates on Saturday, 84-34, in 1B hoops action.

Bryce Strom scored a game-high 34 points in the win for the Eagles (11-2). And teammate Bryan Strom added 18 more.

Dakota Riggs led the Pirates (5-6) with 8 points, followed by Chirstian Arriaga with 7.

The Pirates scored nearly one-third of their points in the first quarter, but still faced a 23-11 deficit.

The Eagles would hold the Pirates to single-digit scoring until the fourth quarter, when Bickleton put up 10 points.

Bickleton will host Toutle Lake (10-4) at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Yakama Tribal will host Klickitat at 7:30 p.m. the same day.
