WASHINGTON, D.C. Fourth District Congressman Rep. Newhouse of Sunnyside has signed on to co-sponsor the Uniting and Securing America (USA) Act.
It is a bipartisan bill introduced by Representatives Will Hurd (R-TX), Pete Aguilar (D-CA), and Jeff Denham (R-CA) that protects Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients from deportation while implementing new commonsense border security measures through enhanced technology, manpower and physical barriers.
The bill also addresses the immigration backlog that keeps families in limbo while advancing reforms in Central America to address the factors driving migration to the United States.
“This legislation, which provides a permanent legislative solution for DACA recipients, accomplishes one of the main goals the President laid out last week by securing the border,” said Rep. Newhouse.
“During last week’s bipartisan meeting, the President called on Congress ‘to sit down and negotiate and to compromise’ and ‘to get something done in good faith’ on DACA,” he added. This bipartisan legislation does just that by addressing some of the President’s priorities for a final deal.”
Newhouse said he visited with the Secretary of Homeland Security and Administration officials to find a way to balance giving Deferred Action recipients certainty and securing the border. He said he pledged his support to work with his colleagues and the Administration.
“For months, I have been urging all sides to work together in good faith. The clock is ticking,” Newhouse said.
