MABTON The cash challenges, that some people at City Hall feared, were caused by the timing of reimbursements on some projects.
Police Chief Phil Haglin, speaking for Mayor Laura Vazquez, said the State Capital Budget that was not passed last year included those reimbursements.
“That involved the water and street projects, especially the new water tower,” Haglin said.
The City was down to about $425,000 total as the year came to an end. That’s about 50 percent of the normal end of year total.
And a lot of it was dedicated to specific funds and couldn’t be used in a general sense.
Haglin said the cost of the projects took a big bite out of general fun revenue. Fortunately, he said, the capital budget was passed in January, and about $400,000 in reimbursements has come in.
“I don’t really know how much, but there is more to come,” Haglin said.
Haglin noted the fire chief, the city clerk, the treasurer and he have been meeting with the mayor every week since the first of the year to brainstorm and develop solutions.
One of the answers was not to move City Hall for the next couple of years. Another was change the Public Works Department schedule from having someone on the job seven days a week.
Now Public Works will have everybody on a regular 5-day schedule, with someone on call on the weekends.
“We were paying some overtime, and things work more efficiently now,” Haglin said.
Haglin said the City’s leadership will continue to examine whether other cost-cutting measures are needed. Meanwhile, Haglin said, things have settled.
