Granger Mayor Jose Trevino hopes to be the next Yakima County Commissioner from District No. 3, saying he wants to apply “common sense, conservative principles” to problem solving.

“My priorities will include public safety,” he said, “working with the elected Sheriff to continue to make public safety a top priority in the county.”

Trevino is also concerned about water and land issues, saying he would explore all options available for sustainable water storage for farmers.

“I understand that the agricultural industry is the biggest employer in the county and biggest economy,” he said. “I would look at ways to streamline processes that slow down growth in the county, as well as ways to limit government involvement on private property.”

Trevino is Texas born. He came with his family to the Valley in the mid-1970s as a migrant farm worker

“I have spent most of my life in the Yakima Valley,” he said. “I received my education mostly in the Sunnyside School District, where I graduated from High School.”

Trevino’s experience includes 28 years of public service. He’s been a police officer, state fraud investigator, city councilman and Mayor.

Trevino’s elective office experience is two years on the Granger City Council and three as mayor

“I have a passion for service,” he said. “I enjoy being a public servant, and I got into politics to serve at a different level. I also felt that if I was not happy with local decisions being made, that affect me and my family everyday; then I needed to run for office and work on making a difference.

Trevino touts fiscal responsibility as one of his strengths. He said good stewardship of tax dollars was his goal as mayor.

“I will continue with my common sense conservative fiscal principles, like I have done with the City of Granger’s budget,” he said.
