A Grandview wrestler finished 7th in her individual weight class at the National Cadet/Junior Freestyle Championships in Fargo, N.D.
The wrestling championships took place July 14-21 in the Fargo Dome, and Maria Reyes was among the competitors in the 106-lb. weight class in the junior division.
There were 40 competitors in Reyes’ weight class, coach Bob Johnson said.
The Grandview High School 4-year varsity competitor will compete for Big Ben Community College in Moses Lake.
The championships were a way to jumpstart her collegiate career in the first-year wrestling program.
The grappler secured a 7th-place medal with a pin over J. Ortiz of Texas. Johnson said Reyes was leading 8-0 in the first period before subduing Ortiz.
This year’s performance earned Reyes All American honors in her weight class.
It is the second time she’s been named All American.
She was the 8th-place competitor in the 100-lb. weight class in 2016, earning All American honors.
Reyes started this year’s championships with a bye, and she pinned a competitor from Virginia in the first period, Johnson said.
“She followed by pinning Soto from New York in the first period to reach the quarterfinals,” he said.
Amandi Jones of Georgia was Reyes’ next opponent and was tough.
“Maria lost 6-0, giving up three takedowns after 6 minutes of wrestling,” he said.
In the blood round, Johnson said Reyes won a tough bout, 5-2, against Nora Ochoa of Nevada to punch her ticket into the consolation semi-finals.
“This was her worst match of the tournament,” Johnson said.
Reyes lost, 11-0, to Corral of Hawaii.
“This put Maria in the medal round, wrestling for 7th/8th place.
“She completely dominated J. Ortiz,” Johnson said.
