Police investigating third homicide of month

Sunnyside Police were called to investigate a shooting at Kiwanis Park just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 25.

What they found there was the third homicide this month.

An unresponsive man was found in the park, having been shot multiple times, Cmdr. Scott Bailey said Thursday

morning.

The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Detectives worked throughout the night, interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.

Bailey said witness accounts lead police to believing the shooting was gang-related.

“Investigators are continuing to work the case,” he said.

Officers from other agencies were requested to assist with patrols and maintaining the perimeter during the initial stages of the investigation.

In response to the spate of shootings and homicides, extra patrols are being provided, Bailey said.

“The Sunnyside Police Department is committed to public trust and the safety of our community,” he said.

Bailey implores the public to contact the department at 509-836-6200 with any information regarding this homicide, or either of the other two police are still investigating.

They include the July 6 killing of 23-year-old Ramon Villalobos Jr., the July 16 shooting on North Avenue and the July 20 killing of Roque Ivan Gonzalez, also 23.
