SUNNYSIDE Sen. Jim Honeyford was honored during a City Council meeting Monday, June 11, for his support of parks and recreation projects in 2018.
According to the Washington Recreation and Parks Association, Honeyford, R-Sunnyside, arranged for $13 million for parks projects, including $40,000 for the new splash park in Granger.
The presentation was made by Doug Levy of the association.
Most of the council meeting was presentations.
There was one by the Miss Sunnyside Court and another by the Cinco de Mayo organizing Committee.
“They had 120 vendors,” Mayor Julia Hart said of this year’s May event. “It was our 30th year and our biggest Cinco de Mayo.”
Hart said Yakima is not planning a Cinco de Mayo celebration next year.
That should allow Sunnyside’s to grow, she said.
Hart said the council also accepted the police guild’s bargaining agreement by a 3-2 vote.
She added that the council is contracting a recruiting company to find the next city manager.
She said the current manager, Don Day, has agreed to stay at the post until his replacement arrives.
