Grizzlies start soccer season with a split

— Traveling, Sunnyside started its soccer season against two fine opponents, topping Union High School, 3-0, and falling to Evergreen,2-1.

After the long trip and game Friday, the Grizzlies were tired Saturday, but they battled Evergreen to the end in a defensive contest.

Sunnyside scored in the 19th minute to tie 1-1. The winning score by Evergreen was tallied when a Sunnyside defender slipped and fell.

“There’s not much to say about it, just one mistake in a very good weekend,” coach David Guervara said.

Sunnyside will have its home opener at 7 p.m. March 13 against Grandview.

The Union game was one to brag about. The Grizzlies kept the opponent out of the goal and controlled the field.

“We looked really strong,” Guervara said. “We made some good passes and played well on through balls.”

Sunnyside was paced by forward Gonzalo Fausto. He scored the first goal on an assist by Cristian Martinez. Fausto scored the second goal unassisted.

Mario Negrete added the third goal off an assist by Martinez.
