— Granger’s girls won two placing awards for the best showing among area schools at state 1A tennis on May 25-26.

The Spartans were led by junior Naya Roettger. She dropped her last two matches, but two opening wins put her in position to finish sixth.

Roettger opened with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over a girl from Bush and a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against a girl from St. George’s.

She dropped the last two matches but battled in both.

A 7-5, 6-2 loss in the semifinals dropped her into consolation play. Then she lost 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to finish sixth.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Roettger and senior Sophie Blodgett took eighth place in girls doubles despite losing their first match.

After dropping a grueling 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 opener against a Chelan duo, they won 7-5, 6-3 against Chelan 2 and 6-4,7-5 against Cascade to get a chance at eighth place.

Both Granger boys’ singles players were eliminated in two matches each.

The Zillah boys’ doubles team of Payton Whitaker and Brock Ellis won its first match then lost two to be eliminated.
