— After picking up her daughter, Alice, 4, from United Methodist Preschool, Sarah Garrisson along with two-year old son Sam, took a field trip to the Sunnyside Post Office and cruised thru the parking lot to drop off mom’s 2018 General Election ballot right before noon on Monday.

“It’s a privilege to vote and be a voice for democracy,” said Garrisson. “I am trying to be a good example to the kids.”

One day remained before Yakima County residents would make their voices heard. Garrisson’s vehicle was not the only one to make a designated stop in front of the brightly colored, ballot drop box. The Elections Division reported 38% of ballots have been returned.

Garrisson, who works for the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic as a nurse practitioner in Toppenish, said that healthcare and safety issues confronting the community in this midterm election were of great concern to her.

Chris Castillo pulled up to the ballot drop box in his rugged and well-equipped Toyota FJ Cruiser. He was prepared for any on and off- road obstacle, which might have stood in the way of casting his ballot.

“The reason I am voting and why it’s so important is because this is the way your voice can be heard, stated Castillo. At the end of the day, this how we make a difference. You have to vote.”

Jack and Doris Hinderlider carpooled to the post office parking lot destination in a deep blue colored, Dodge Journey. The retired couple stopped to deposit their ballots and reflected on the purpose of the cross-town adventure.

“We want to do our part in helping the community get the right people elected, said Jack Hinderlider.
