Trio from Louisiana face drug charges

— Three men arrested at Interstate 82, Exit 67 at Sunnyside are facing several charges, including possession of marijuana.

Taijon Uzziah Davis, 19, is facing charges of possessing a stolen firearm, driving while license suspended, driving under the influence and possession of marijuana charges.

His passengers were Timothy Jontrail Gaines, 23, and Donnie Perkins, 22. Gaines faces charges of concealing a firearm and possession of marijuana over 40 grams, while Perkins faces a charge of possession of marijuana over 40 grams.

All three men are from Shreeveport, La.

The Washington State Patrol said, in a narrative submitted to Yakima County Superior Court Judge Gayle M. Harthcock on Tuesday, there was a total of 282.5 grams (more than ½ pound) of marijuana in the men’s possession at the time of the arrest.

A trooper said he clocked a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze with Texas plates traveling 85 mph in a 70 mph zone at Milepost 65 eastbound.

The trooper said the driver failed to stop for more than a quarter mile when a traffic stop was attempted.

Once the driver, later identified as Davis, did comply and the trooper was able to contact him, the trooper said he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the car.

Davis also exhibited signs of being under the influence, the trooper said.

The trooper asked the men how much marijuana they had, and they denied having any.

He said Davis also said he couldn’t find his driver’s license, but once detained, it was located in his front pocket.

“It was later learned from Washington State DOL (Department of Licensing) that Davis was DWLS 3rd (driving while license suspended third degree),” the trooper said in the narrative.

Davis also had a warrant, the trooper noted.

After obtaining a search warrant, the trooper said he found a stolen 9 mm Smith and Wesson, as well as 56.7 grams of marijuana in a backpack belonging to Davis.

Gaines had a Glock 40 caliber concealed in a backpack and 112 grams of marijuana in another bag located in the trunk, according to the trooper.

Perkins also had a bag in the trunk in which another 113.8 grams of marijuana was located, the trooper said.

Davis is in the Yakima County Jail. His bail was set at $7,000.

Gaines and Perkins are listed as having been released from jail.

Arraignment dates were not available as of press time.
