Ellensburg takes bite out of Grandview, Prosser

The host Grandview and Prosser girls swim teams were outpaced by Ellensburg this past Tuesday at Prosser Aquatic Center.

The Bulldogs swam away with a 127-21 win against the much smaller Greyhounds team and defeated the Mustangs 107-60.

Prosser had seven second-place finishes, while Grandview had two third-place times with just four competitors.

Kourtnee Soria of the Greyhounds lapped the 25-yard pool for a time of 3:00.66 in the 200-yard freestyle. The best time (2:14.07) was posted by Katherine Denison of Ellensburg.

In the same event, scoring only between the Mustangs and the Bulldogs, Tedra Everett was the second fastest swimmer with a time of 2:39.30.

The Mustangs’ 200-yard medley relay team — Everett, Rachel Blount, Abby Albrecht and Madisen Mendez — also garnered a runner-up time. They combined for a clocking of 2:18.49, just .21 seconds behind Ellensburg’s relay time of 2:18.28.

Grace Bestebreur of Prosser was runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley, tagging the edge of the pool in 2:55.58, while Christine Nale of the Bulldogs finished in 2:36.76.

The next to finish in second for the Mustangs was Brooklyn Shuultz in the 50-yard freestyle. She completed the race in 29.61, and the first-place finisher, Katie Holt of Ellensburg clocked a time of 29.36.

Mendez scored additional points, finishing second with a time of 1:13.86 in the 100-yard butterfly. The best clocking was 1:11.24 by Holt.

Both host teams were third to Ellensburg in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Prosser’s Alexa Rutherford, Allie Murphy, Maritza Barrigan and Abby Fitzgerald clocked 2:37.90, and Grandview’s Soria, Katrina Guillen, Jovana Delgado and Caitlin McGhan combined efforts for a time of 2:40.66.

Albrecht came up with a second-place finish for the Mustangs in the 100-yard breaststroke, tagging the edge of the pool in 1:26.87. Nale was the first back to the blocks in 1:24.27.

In the final race of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Shultz, Bestebreur, Blount and Everett teamed up for a time of 4:58.66 for a second-place clocking. The Bulldogs finished in 4:24.13.

Guillen and Soria each had fourth-place times in their individual races — the 50- and 100-yard freestyle — for the Greyhounds, and McGhan had two fourth-place clockings. She competed in the 100-yard butterfly and backstroke races.
