Free movie Saturday

Again this year, Yakima Valley Grand Cinemas and the Daily Sun are partnering to provide a free movie at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The movie, “Sing” opens at 10 a.m. and runs one hour and 48 minutes, giving parents a little child-free time for holiday shopping.

Astria names new administrator

Astria Heart Institute has hired Corinne Murphy-Hines as its new administrator. The institute is operated as part of the Sunnyside-based Astria health care system.

The indoor yard sale, previously scheduled for Saturday at the city community center, has been cancelled.

Man faces theft charge

A 27-year-old arrested here Oct. 26 made his first appearance yesterday in Yakima County Superior Court. Alberto Verduzco Reyna was charged with forgery, second-degree possession of stolen property and second-degree theft.

Commissioners put pot on hold

Two voted for moratorium, one was absent

Benton County commissioners stood a little tougher against the marijuana culture at their regular meeting Tuesday, and the folks seem to agree. Commissioners Jim Beaver and Shon Small voted to place a 6-month moratorium on the production and processing of marijuana in unincorporated Benton County. Commissioner Jerome Delvin was absent.

Heritage University Campus will be site of community forum

A community forum on the status of children brought illegally into the U.S. will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Heritage University. The forum will include presentations, educational information and an update of the rescinding of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Brad Hendrickson nominated as secretary of the Senate

Brad Hendrickson was unanimously nominated by Democrats to serve as the next secretary of the Senate. Before taking the post, his nomination must still be approved by a majority of the Senate.

Troopers plan traffic emphasis through Nov. 26

Cougar football fans encouraged to drive safely and be prepared for winter weather

The Washington State Patrol has extra units on Eastern Washington highways through Nov. 26. Troopers will be targeting motorists who are speeding, driving too fast for conditions and using cellphones behind the wheel. Up-to-date road information will be posted to Twitter using the hashtags BeSafeCougs and #AppleCup.

State seeks input on using Volkswagen settlement funds

State officials are seeking residents' input on how to spend the $112.7 million Washington could receive from a federal settlement with Volkswagen to reduce diesel air pollution. A webinar on using the money is set for 10 a.m. Nov. 28 and a Facebook streaming town hall is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 29.

Moratorium set for pot

Benton County commissioners have approved an emergency moratorium on new marijuana growing and processing businesses. The moratorium passed 2-0, with one abstention, Tuesday.
