Grizzly Academy gives freshmen a headstart on high school life

All freshmen will return on Tuesday, Aug. 26, to pick up their class schedules, hopefully with a better idea of where classrooms are located in the Sunnyside High School campus.

The first unofficial day of high school started this past Monday for more than 200 Sunnyside High School freshmen, like Jolissa Mendoza and Lia Anderson (L-R), who chose to attend Grizzly Academy. The four-day academy gives the freshmen an opportunity to get reacquainted after the summer break and to get a look at what high school life will be like, according to Stephanie Torpey, academy director.

Incoming SHS freshman Baldemar Tovar listens as leadership class instructor Tina Peabody tells students that now is the time to choose what their high school career will be like. “You have an opportunity for a fresh start this year,” she said. “It’s up to you.” The leadership session was one of 12 break-out sessions attended by the incoming class of 2018.
