Renton claims the Seahawks as its own

RENTON – While the Seahawks play their home games in downtown Seattle, since 2008 the city of Renton has also had a stake in the success of the team. The Seahawks’ training facility, the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, is located in north Renton along the shore of Lake Washington. The site, purchased by Seahawks’ owner Paul Allen in 2000, was once home to a coal tar refinery & creosote plant. The building of the facility was accompanied by a clean-up of the site and surrounding areas. Thanks in part to the Seahawks being located in town, Renton has experienced a revival recently. Once a Boeing company town, Renton now boasts a chic shopping area, The Landing, south of the Seahawks facility along the shore of Lake Washington. Every April the city holds a 12K run with a route that circles the athletic facility. During training camp in July, local businesses fly Seahawks’ colors and specially designed “cheer cards” in their windows.

The Virginia Mason Athletic Center is easily visible from local walking trails in Renton, as well as I-405. The location was once a coal tar refinery & creosote plant. As part of the deal to build the facility, Seahawks’ owner Paul Allen cleaned up the site and restored natural wetlands to the area.
