This “Shoofly” quilt square graces the Glory Farm barn, which was built in 1894 on Dry Creek near Ellensburg. Each quilt block is positioned so that it can be easily be seen by motorists traveling the state’s only Barn Quilt Trail.

The Kittitas County Barn Quilt Trail celebrates not only the history of agriculture in the county, but the pioneers who settled in the Valley. The quilt blocks like the “Patriotic Star” pattern seen at Dusty’s Nursery in Ellensburg celebrates those pioneers.

Not all of the Kittitas County quilt blocks are mounted on barns. In South Cle Elum, this “Railroad Crossing” pattern is appropriately located near the former Milwaukee Railroad Depot and Rail Yard. The landmark is a part of the South Cle Elum Rail Yard National Historic District, located near the head of the Ironhorse Trail.

The barn quilts are painted on large wooden squares, which are mounted on the gable end of a barn like this “American Independence” block on the Gibson Farm barn, located on South Thorp Highway.

On the Woody Farm, near Thorp, this block, named “Here Comes the Sun,” adorns a barn built in 1928 on Thorp Cemetery Road. The barn is now owned by Merle and Marna Woody.
