'Heavenly' harvest at Sunnyside farm

Workers pack spaghetti squash into boxes for shipping to the west side of the mountains. The certified organic farm recently received a “Salmon-safe Farm” certificate for its efforts to protect fish habitat. The farm sits on the banks of the Yakima River.

Farm intern Taylor Ray prepares bouquets of basil for customers of the farm’s community supported agriculture program. Through the program, customers get weekly boxes of fresh food grown on the farm.

Taylor Ray, who is working as an intern on the farm, pulls carrots. Ray is from Spokane and has been working on the farm since April. Fellow intern Eric Streed is from Iowa. Both have been learning about organic farming from Heavenly Hills Harvest owner Merritt Mitchell-Wajeeh.

Fresh carrots are among the offerings at Heavenly Hills Harvest farm, which covers 92 acres near the Yakima River on South Emerald Road near Sunnyside. The farm is completely organic and focuses on teaching sustainable methods of farming to locals, as well as interns from all over the country.

The chickens at Heavenly Hills Harvest farm have a comfortable coop to lay eggs in, but have suffered from coyote attacks in the past year. Intern Taylor Ray scared off a coyote one night, rescuing a chicken whose nickname is now “Lucky Penny.”

Bins of buttercup squash are ready to box up and roll out to markets around the Pacific Northwest. Fresh squash will be sold this coming Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Silbury Hill Alpacas “For the Love of Art and Paws” event.
