Very well stated John!!! The LTAC funds are taxes paid by the visitors that stay in a hotel, motel or B&B and are to be used to assist visitors in coming to your town. The visitors may be visiting friends or relatives and staying with them or at one of the afore mentioned businesses. Mr. Denlea needs to realize this and stop trying to build his own business by spending those funds. It is almost as if Mr. Denlea has a conflict of interest, except I know the law requires that those collecting the taxes be allowed to serve on the oversight board that approves or recommends how they are spent. A portion of those funds can be used to operate a visitor information center or provide visitor information signage. John, you did a very good job on this article, it would help the general public if a little more information about the RCW's on this topic could be put in front of the public. Thanks for the great OP ED piece.
Mr. Schlieve deserves a big THANK YOU from all of us in Sunnyside! This is a great project that he has taken from a idea to fruition, great job Greg and Thank You!
ssoverlord, thanks for correcting me.
It appears as though Sunnyside may finally have a Finance Director that knows what he is doing, which hasn't been the case since Councilman Vlieger made sure Bud Schatz left the City.
As stated above, the PD expenses are at 72% about right for 3/4 of the year but that figure is without a Chief of Police salary and with several months without a crime analyst salary. If you factor in those two salaries, I'm guessing that the numbers through Sept (3/4 of 2013 budget year) would be way past 75% or 3/4 of the year's budget. Trying to smooth over the excessive overtime costs by pointing to the under 75% number through Sept is a nice try to get us to not notice the overtime--BUT we notice.
The Finance Officer wants to reach a $4M reserve in the General Fund, good luck with that!!! When Vlieger came on council there was a $1+M in reserves and what did he do SPEND, SPEND till it was all but gone. Now he is bragging about a mere $300,000 in the General Fund, and that is thanks to an accounting error that showed the General Fund nearly broke a couple of months ago. The Finance Officer has his job cut out for him if Vlieger remains on council.
Councilmen Raines and Vlieger only support gang suppresion or bullying of the public by the PD. They only support things that they can control!! They operate through intimidation and behind closed doors.
This is not what SS needs!! Remeber the old adage "the more you tighten the strings, the more that slips through", in other people tend to rebel when one is trying to control them!
Sunnyside needs to be proactive and a good team member working with other organizations throughout the community to prevent gang involvement. The School District, SS Hospital & Port are good partners and together they can help make a hugh difference in Sunnyside's future, each one using its strenghts.
Very well stated Councilman Broersma!!! You are the person I have always known you to be, fair, honest and hard working. Sunnyside is very fortunate to have you on council.
Maybe with better scheduling management we could hire more officers and eliminate the high cost of overtime. Required training should be part of their schedule and not automatically considered overtime!!! At budget time the Chief or Deputy Chief should know what training is required or needed and that should be considered in the overall budget. Many Many businesses run 24/365 and do not, I repeat do not allow over time, they schedule appropriately for the 24/7/365 and the PD should be no different. I have spoken to many different police chiefs in areas other than around SS and have been told that over time is something that ONLY happens in an emergency. Why is SS so different??? Because our so called Deputy Chief is not a manager of any kind he is a tyrant, which is not a good thing when dealing with our citizens!!!!!
With all the gang related issues happening at Parkland Homes where are Councilmen Vlieger and Raines and their outrage at the crimes? Could it be that Parkland Homes is owned and operated by their good friend Wayne Overland? During the last year or so any time a local business was the site of gang related activity the PD and these two Councilmen were asking for heads to roll, but at Parkland Homes they are quiet!! It really pays to have friends in high places. What is good for the Goose should be good for the Gander, don't you think?
Ms. Hancock makes some very good points in this article. We shouldn't have a council person that doesn't want a sustainable budget, unsustainable spending will ruin the City. Ms. Hancock has consistently voted for a balanced budget that lived within the means of the City's revenues across all departments of the City. My vote is for Ms. Hancock and I urge all voters in our great community to do the same.
That surplus you refer to is down to $300K from around $1M. As the article stated in yesterday's paper the crime statistics may not be accurate!!
